Pre-MWC: Android overtakes iOS in the UK, Germany and Russia

One of our previous predictions was that Android will take over the lead in monthly downloads from iOS by June 2012. Ever since we have seen one country after another where exactly this happened. In August, Android surpassed iOS monthly app downloads in three tracked countries: Czech Republic, Poland and Portugal. In October Brazil and then in November Spain followed.

In January we can now add four new countries – namely the UK, Germany and Russia – to the list. If the current trend of hyper-exponential trend for Android continues then the US will follow by March or April.

Here are the numbers for the related countries in January:

Compared to all other European countries UK Android phone users mostly follow the general Android app trends and download relatively few new or local apps. As in most countries around the world Facebook took the top spot with 1,2M app downloads. While there were 7,0M downloads of new apps, only Bubble Shoot was the single new app which made the way into the top 25 of the month. Only seven apps in the top 100 were local apps with  Sky Sports Football among the leaders . For an overview read our monthly top apps report.

Compared to the their UK counterparts German Android phone users are more interested to follow local app trends. As much as 16 apps in the top 100 were local apps, with Make me bald , Barcoo and or TVgo LiveTV among the most successful examples. 5,1M new apps were downloaded. Further still, Russian Android users are even more interested in local apps and content. 7 out of the top 20 downloaded apps were local apps. In fact Анекдоты, a collection of jokes, was the No.1 most downloaded app with 414,000 downloads. Also Mind Games , Помнить Всё or Puzzles with Matches were particularly successful. 3,5M new apps were downloaded.
